Watch NASA Fire Up A Vintage F-1 Engine

Watch a relic of old space technology being brought back to life by NASA. In the video, NASA fires up an F-1 engine, a type of engine which last roared to life in 1972. This particular engine was stored at the Smithsonian for 40 years. To give you an idea how insanely powerful these engines are, they produce 55,000 horsepower. This particular test is just a firing of the F-1 engine’s gas generator, a part of the engine that fed the turbine which in turn fed the gas chamber with liquid fuel. So imagine this inside the whole thing powering just the turbine which feeds the bigger and definitely more powerful main engine. We know, we also have a hard time wrapping our heads around how powerful the F-1 is.
