Growing Synthetic Diamonds


Russell J. Hemley, director of the Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., walks through the process for making diamonds in a lab. You can’t call this “making fake diamonds” because these diamonds are even more perfect than natural ones. I don’t think this will decrease the value of a diamond because natural ones still have their value. It is so ironic that we cherish diamonds for their perfection and yet with this technology we realize that the most valuable diamond will still be the one with imperfections, a natural one and not grown in a lab.
