Beets found to significantly improve athletic performance while reducing oxygen needs, upsetting a fundamental tenet of sports physiology. Before this study there was no known substance that could actually increase energy extraction from oxygen, not even Lance Armstrong’s cocktail but beet juice seems to improve performance by 20%. Or to be more specific athletes would do the same amount of work with 20% less oxygen. Then when they were asked to perform at full capacity they increased their time to exhaustion from 9 minutes to 11 minutes. Would you consider beet juice a doping substance now if this study proves to be correct?
